It's been six years since the tragic murder of George Floyd, and yet another senseless killing has taken place in Minneapolis, right under the nose of the authorities. This time, it was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who took a life, and the circumstances are deeply troubling.
On January 7, 2026, Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed by an ICE agent. She had just dropped off one of her children at school and was minding her own business when this tragedy unfolded. Renee, a poet, writer, and devoted Christian, had recently moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City. Her ex-husband described her as someone who had never been involved in activism or protests, making her death all the more shocking.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The killing took place in broad daylight, just a stone's throw away from where Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. It was witnessed by a crowd of onlookers, and the video footage has since gone viral, sparking outrage and raising important questions about the use of force by government agents.
In 2020, Floyd's murder sparked nationwide protests, with people demanding reform and even calling for defunding the police. The question now is, how will America react to Renee's death? It's up to us, the people, to stand up against this violence and demand accountability. We must say no to this abuse of power and ensure that ICE is held to a higher standard.
And this is the part most people miss...
When the ICE agents arrived at the scene, they immediately escalated the situation. Instead of de-escalating and showing respect for human life, as their own use-of-force policy dictates, they resorted to shouting and issuing aggressive commands. One agent even tried to open Renee's car door, creating a tense and frightening atmosphere.
The video footage shows Renee attempting to drive away, and in that moment, one of the agents opened fire. His life was not in danger, yet he chose to use lethal force. While we wish Renee had reacted differently, nothing she did justified taking her life.
Forty years ago, the US Supreme Court ruled that police cannot use lethal force solely to stop someone from fleeing. Justice Byron White wrote, "It is not better that... felony suspects die than that they escape." This ruling sets a clear standard, and yet, it seems that ICE agents under the Trump administration are disregarding these principles.
ICE's actions reflect a vision of a world governed by strength, force, and power, a vision that America should not accept. We demand better from those who wield the coercive power of the state. We expect them to be highly trained and to prioritize de-escalation.
The killing of Renee Nicole Good is a stark reminder of the need for reform and a call to action. We must not let her death be in vain. It's time to stand together and demand justice, peace, and lawful change.
