LaMonte's journey began in St. Louis, where he served in the US Navy as an aerial photographer. His talents extended beyond music; he was also an accomplished sports and celebrity photographer, with his work gracing the pages of renowned magazines like Jet.
But here's where it gets interesting: LaMonte's path to musical stardom was paved with diverse experiences. He played baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers' farm system and even sang in a jazz ensemble, the Hi-Fi's, alongside future bandmate Marilyn McCoo.
In 1965, LaMonte, McCoo, and two of his childhood friends from St. Louis, Billy Davis Jr. and Ronald Towson, along with schoolteacher Florence LaRue, formed the Versatiles. However, it was Johnny Rivers, the singer and owner of Soul City Records, who suggested they change their name to the 5th Dimension, a name that reflected their embrace of psychedelia and hippy culture.
And this is the part most people miss: the 5th Dimension's success was not limited to one genre. They achieved broad crossover appeal, winning six Grammy awards, including Record of the Year twice for 'Up, Up and Away' and 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In.' Both songs were massive hits, with the latter spending an impressive six weeks at No. 1 on the pop charts.
LaMonte's legacy extends beyond his musical achievements. He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 30 years, Mieko McLemore, their children Ciara and Darin, his sister Joan, and three grandchildren.
